Zoo keepers give baby a helping hand

A rare and elusive antelope has been born at Paignton Zoo – and keepers are making sure she gets a good start in life.

The female bongo was born overnight on 11th April. Her father is Chat and her mother is Makosi. She has been named Adina.

Keepers stepped in to provide supplementary feeding after Adina’s mother appeared to be short of milk. At first she had three feeds a day of a cow milk replacer – Triple A Golden Maverick - with yoghurt, but this has now been reduced to one a day and will soon be phased out altogether as her mother is feeding her naturally.

Bongos are found in dense tropical jungles in parts of central and Western Africa. Paignton Zoo now has a herd of nine.

PHOTO AVAILABLE: the picture shows keepers Lorraine Miller and Brian Raynes with Adina.
