New Play and Picnic area at Rosemoor Gardens June 2009

Families just love ‘The Brash’ at Rosemoor!

The fantastic new family picnic and play area, ‘The Brash’, at RHS Garden Rosemoor in Great Torrington was officially opened on 27 May 2009 with a ‘Bangers and Brash Party’, and despite the weather being rainy on the actual day, the area was enjoyed by all in the lovely sunny days that followed during May Half Term!

Rosemoor's Head of Site, Sally Charleton, officially opened The Brash with a short speech and a ribbon cutting ceremony, and everyone was invited to enjoy a free 'banger' in the marquee after they had finished playing – although even the offer of food failed to lure some of the kids away from the fun they were having in the woods!

Children and their parents had a great time playing and picnicing in the fabulous new family area, which features log stepping stones, giant bugs, dens, bird feeding stations and much more. The area was created by Rosemoor’s Gardeners, and is entirely natural, with all the seating, log stepping stones and wood carvings being made from a large beech tree that had to be chopped down a few years ago. The den was made from hazel from the garden, the pine cones were collected by staff from the woods and the wind chimes were made from bamboo and hazel from the garden.

Sally says ‘We wanted to create an area for children to play within the garden itself, which was in keeping with the natural surroundings of Rosemoor. We hope that children will use the area for imaginative play, and fully explore all the different features that we have created. Don’t forget to bring your picnic along too!’

Rosemoor has asked children and parents to feed in their ideas for future developments to The Brash, and has already received a number of positive comments, including ‘“Very glad you don’t have all those brightly coloured swings and slides, this is much more natural.”, and “I love the big bugs !”
