Age is no barrier to volunteering at one of Torbay’s wildlife attractions – in fact, it’s a positive advantage.
Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo, is looking for older or retired volunteers.
Living Coasts volunteer co-ordinator Stephanie Robey said: “Young people have lots to offer, but we know that mature people make great volunteers. Not only do they tend to have more time, but they often have a huge sense of commitment and a lifetime of skills to draw on. We are looking for people who are reliable, confident, out-going and who have an interest in conservation, the environment and animals.”
The charity has a range of volunteer tasks available, from helping visitors and making badges to admin, answering the telephone and assisting with events.
“Volunteering keeps people active mentally and physically, it keeps them focused, helps them meet new people and makes use of their skills. It’s also good for you - studies have shown that those who volunteer live longer, healthier, and more satisfying lives!”
Stephanie adds: “People are keen to use their retirement to try new things and to achieve something different. Many people want to give something back to the community after years of paid work.”
John and Jo Wallington, both in their mid-seventies and from Wellswood in Torquay, have been volunteering at Living Coasts since it opened in 2003. John does eleven hours a week spread over two days and Jo joins him at busier times, such as school holidays.
John said: “Living Coasts is a good place to volunteer because it's a very pleasant and interesting environment and the staff and other volunteers are great people to work with.”
Their duties include meeting and greeting visitors, assisting with Penguin Patrol, fundraising by making and selling badges, helping Santa at Christmas - and anything else that comes along. Volunteering is important to John: “It gives me a commitment and enables me to keep in touch with younger people. I'm also contributing something to the community in which I live.”
