Triple Challenge for Paignton Zoo staff June 2010

Three mountains, three countries, three people in 24 hours – that’s the challenge facing a trio of happy hikers from Paignton Zoo Environmental Park.

The three - Visitor Services Manager Izzy Warren, Membership Coordinator Justin Fuller and Senior Mammal Keeper Craig Gilchrist, who works with the gorillas – are taking on the Three Peaks Challenge to conquer Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Scafell Pike.

They are tackling the mountainous charity challenge in June to raise money for Paignton Zoo conservation projects.

The three will climb Ben Nevis in Western Scotland, which is 1,344 metres (4,409 ft) high, followed by Scafell Pike in North-Western England (978 metres, 3,209 ft). The last peak is Snowdon in North Wales, at 1,085 metres (3,560 ft).

The challenge involves some 42 kilometres (26 miles) of ascent and descent, with a total distance travelled approaching 765 kilometres (475 miles).

Izzy Warren: “It will be a big challenge to complete the trek within 24 hours – we will have to cope with weather, traffic, fatigue, hunger and possible injuries. We are taking our training very seriously. I’m walking to work and doing sections of the coastal path on my days off. You need a high level of fitness and everything has to be well-planned.”

They have adopted a giant cuddly gorilla as their mascot - Coco is collecting money for them in the foyer of Paignton Zoo.

They start their 24 hour challenge at the bottom of Ben Nevis and will finish when they have made their way back down Snowdon. Colleagues from Paignton Zoo will act as their support team, doing the driving and preparing food.

“It’s a popular challenge - we are doing it in June, before the busy season starts and during the week, so it will be quieter. It’s good to challenge yourself in life, but even better when a great charity can benefit in the process.”

The National Three Peaks Challenge is a mountain-endurance challenge with a 40 year history. Participants attempt to climb the highest peaks of each of the three countries. Whilst the challenge has no official rules or time restrictions, many participants try and complete it within 24 hours.

To sponsor them telephone (01803) 697512. Paignton Zoo Environmental Park is a registered charity. For more information go to www.paigntonzoo.org.uk or ring (01803) 697500.
