Trains will be running all over the Easter holidays
Early spring is a fantastic time to see the South Devon Railway, with the buds beginning to show on the trees and an abundance of wildflowers along the line.
So, this Easter Sunday and Monday, come and savour two days of nostalgia, scenery and interest on the South Devon Railway, with something for the whole family.
With one steam train and one heritage diesel train operating, plus a steam operated ‘auto train’ (or push and pull), where, in one direction, the driver controls the train from a compartment in the carriage, there is an intensive service running on both days.
You can also come and see a great selection of road vehicles from the past. The Devon Vintage Car Club is putting on a display featuring up to 100 cars, motor bikes and light commercial vehicles too.
In the yard at Buckfastleigh station, the shunting demonstration is always a fascinating draw as we show how goods trains used to be assembled and disassembled as the shunter shows his skills.
Buckfastleigh’s popular miniature railway will be open with a special guest in the guise of a replica steam locomotive based on those which worked the famous Darjeeling Railway in India.
For those who love model trains or are just fascinated by incredible model engineering, the garden railway will be open, operating a superb selection of live steam traction.
The station’s museum, featuring Tiny, the only surviving original broad gauge locomotive, and the Lee Moor Tramway museum showing off the unusual 4’6” ‘Dartmoor Gauge’ Peckett saddle tank Lee Moor No 2, will both be open, as will the original Buckfastleigh Signal Box.
There will be an Easter Egg hunt and lots of other children’s activities, vintage fairground attractions, while the railway’s London Transport Routemaster bus will be taking passengers around the local area. There’s a chance, too, see the new running shed and climb aboard locomotives 3803 and 3205.
Don’t forget to visit the Refreshment Rooms and the gift and model shop and great value 3 Great Attractions, 1 Amazing Day joint tickets will be on sale for the railway, Dartmoor Otters & Buckfast Butterflies and/or the Totnes Rare Breeds Farm to add even more interest and variety to your visit.
