Asian and African people involved in the First World War are brought to life in thought-provoking sound, film and pictures.
Asian and African people involved in the First World War are brought to life in thought-provoking sound, film and pictures. The selection was curated by volunteer researchers from minority ethnic communities, with Hikmat Devon.
The ethnically diverse faces of war are portrayed in pastel by French artist Eugène Burnand, and letters from the Front are read by local people of Asian and African heritage. The display includes films of Indian troops and photographs of the Chinese Labour Corps, which served on the Western Front doing hard manual work and clearing battlefields of landmines and bodies.
The Hikmat Remembers project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and led to an emotional journey of learning and reflection for everyone involved. It provides a glimpse into a lesser known side of a well-documented war.
