Family-run park marks a milestone with special celebrations and awards
2026 is a milestone year for River Dart Country Park in Ashburton, Devon; the family-run attraction is celebrating its 50th birthday. Since opening in 1976, the park has welcomed generations of families, schools, and groups, becoming one of Devon’s most loved outdoor destinations.
The park’s popular Picnic at the Park event in the summer will act as the official 50th birthday party, bringing together families, friends, and visitors for a day of music, food, and fun. Additional celebrations, special events, and limited-edition souvenirs will take place throughout the year.
A Family Legacy
River Dart Country Park has been family-run since it opened, with leadership passed through generations. Key milestones include:
1976: Park opens as a campsite and visitor attraction
1980: Residential centre opens for schools, groups, and corporate training
1986: Joins Devon’s Top Attractions and wins its first camping award
1998: Mark Simpson assumed the role of Director in 1998, carrying forward the family legacy established by his father, Patrick.
Today, the park continues to thrive under the same family values, offering adventure, outdoor learning, and memorable experiences for all ages.
