Powderham Castle in Kenton lies in a beautiful deer park on the banks of the River Exe, just a stone’s throw from the historic cathedral city of Exeter.

The Castle was first opened to visitors in 1959, since then in excess of a million people have been through the doors to share in over 600 years of history and heritage and take away many fond memories. To this day, the castle is the family home of The Earl of Devon.

Very little of the Castle itself has changed since those early days but there are now many more attractions in the grounds including the Secret Garden, Belvedere Tower and American Garden. Dogs are most welcome within the castle, gardens and grounds and can visit for free!

Our free guided castle tour unveils the majestic rooms and fascinating stories of the Courtenay family, adapted for an entertaining experience. The State Room Tour chronicles Powderham’s architectural journey, while the Upstairs/Downstairs Tour offers intimate insights into the private lives of the Courtenay family.

Venture outside to discover acres of delight, including the Secret Garden, Play Area & Pets Corner, where animals happily coexist with visitors. Don’t miss the American Woodland Garden for a scenic picnic amidst exotic trees and finish your day with a visit to the Courtyard Café, offering light lunches, refreshing beverages, and delightful cream teas, with ample seating options for an enjoyable dining experience.

Every seasons, there’s a reason to visit.

Well worth a visit

It was a beautiful day which added to the enjoyment of the day. Included in the admission were 2 tours which we did. The guides were very informative and interesting… We really enjoyed the day and would like to make a special mention to the young lady on the ticket kiosk as she was so helpful and friendly. She is an asset to Powderham.

Great family day out

We had a lovely family day out at Powderham castle. The castle and grounds are stunning and our guided tour was excellent. Special thanks to Dave our tour guide for involving the children in the tour – one of the best tours we’ve been on. The walled garden play area and petting zoo were a real highlight with wonderful friendly staff.
Highly recommended family day out!
