View EventWe’re excited to welcome Survival School to Kents Cavern on 30th May for a special day of live demonstrations showcasing the ancient skills our ancestors once relied on to hunt and thrive.
Looking for something truly different to do this May half term? Step into the shoes of our ancestors with Hands of the Hunter, live Stone Age demonstrations.
Join Survival School as they demonstrate the hands-on techniques early humans would have used to survive. This educational experience is perfect for families, couples and anyone with a curiosity for prehistory and how humans lived tens of thousands of years ago.
Stripping bark from hazel rods to craft traditional arrows
Shaping and finishing flint arrowheads
Carving notches for arrowheads and bow strings
Creating fires using friction and percussion methods
Making adhesives from resin, charcoal and beeswax
Straightening arrows using soapstone straighteners
Fitting arrowheads and securing them with natural glue
Preparing feathers for flights and fletchings
Tying and fixing flights to complete the arrow
Working on yew bow staves to replicate Mesolithic–Neolithic bows
As you watch these ancient skills in action, ask yourself: Would you have survived the Stone Age?
Great news! These demonstrations are included with your cave tour ticket so there’s no need to book anything additional. Survival School will be on-site all day and will be on our front lawn (weather permitting) showcasing these ancient skills.
