Master of the Music at Buckfast Abbey, Matthew Searles performs an all-Baroque programme in the first half of the concert, including de Grigny’s setting of the plainsong hymn for Pentecost, Veni creator, and music by J. S. Bach and Sweelinck. After the interval, Matthew explores the legacy of 19th–20th Century French organ music, by Charles-Marie Widor, his student Louis Vierne, and the ‘father’ of the French Romantic organ school, César Franck in the 200th anniversary of his birth. The recital closes with the final two movements of Igor Stravinsky’s suite, L’oiseau de feu (The Firebird), which catapulted the composer to international fame following its premiere at the Opéra de Paris in 1910.
