View EventDevon’s long history of involvement with Africa initially centred on the trade of human cargoes but the lack of research has given rise to divergent assumptions. In examining the last five hundred years, Dr Gray will draw upon some one hundred thousand documents and reveal the outline of the county’s most challenging historic topic. It will show the ways in which Devon’s history diverges from the national narrative. The historical evidence will help bridge the deepening gap in how this history is understood in Devon.
Dr Gray is the author of Devon & the Slave Trade (revised 2020), Not One of Us (2018) and Devon’s Last Slave-Owners (2021) which are all available through the RAMM shop.
